Selman Dilek

This site brings together my scholarly work and essays on the history of philosophy and the meeting of Islamic and European thought.

My academic journey began with studies in History, Sociology, and Religious Studies in Istanbul and Bamberg. Subsequently, I earned a PhD in Philosophy specializing in medieval mysticism from Erlangen.

I have accumulated experience through diverse organizations, delivering lectures at the Social Sciences University, and participating in fellowships in Marburg and Amman.

I have been a visiting fellow at the Warburg Institute in London and Regent’s Park College in Oxford. Currently, I teach Medieval and Ancient Thought at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul, and I am actively preparing my habilitation on the theology of history.

My studies in Arabic and Islamic disciplines followed a traditional path, complemented by lectures from several masters in various fields of religious sciences, resulting in ijazahs. I hold a particular mystical view of life, derived from the spiritual teachings of Akbari Sufism.

In this regard, I have compiled a selection of writings that interpret thoughts from a variety of religious and cultural traditions, which I present on this website. One of my primary intellectual interests is the perception of Islam by European thinkers and vice versa. I aim to address the prevailing confusion and misunderstanding by advocating mutual interaction and collaborative learning.
